The New Member Coffee Reception, hosted by Rachel Krinsky at the YWCA and organized by Jason Beren brought together members as new as 3-weeks, with a lifetime member; several of our past presidents and those of us in between.

Jason Beren, once again, put together an enlightening program.  Carol Koby gave the history of the radical concept of opening Rotary to women first introduced in 1934 at a Rotary-Chicago meeting.  Today, twenty percent of the Downtown Rotary Club of Madison membership is women.  She reminded us that women are Rotarians who happen to be women, not women in Rotary.

Rachel Krinsky, a member of our Rotary Board, described the principles of the Large Impact Project that will involve all aspects of our Club in addressing ways to improve racial inequality.  This 3-prong project will be achieved by:

  1. Having every committee and fellowship group look at their participation through an equity lens;
  2. Making our Rotary Club a model by partnering with businesses to advise, hire, and retain employees to correct the inequity imbalance; and;
  3. Beginning in 2016 partnering with the Madison Public School District to provide programs for students of color.

Through the Large Impact Project we all have a role in its success.

Jason closed the meeting with the announcement of the formation of the upcoming “New Member Roast Committee” which brought President Ellsworth Brown to full attention.  As Dickens would have said “a good time was enjoyed by all.”

Last Thursday 25+ new and experienced Rotarians came together to network and learn about the opportunities that come with being a Rotarian.

NME 9 17 2015 EJason Beren from the Member Development Committee welcomed the group and everyone had a chance to introduce themselves. A presentation followed and started with the work that is supported internationally and locally with both The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and our club’s Madison Rotary Foundation. Rotarians are encouraged to participate in both and Paul Harris recognition is given to those that contribute at least $1,000 to The Rotary International Foundation which can be a cumulative gift over time.

There are many ways to participate in Rotary outside of the regular scheduled weekly luncheon and is highly encouraged and also a way to do make-ups.  One member explained that fellowship groups are a great way to engage a spouse, partner or family. Rotarians can also attend other Rotary clubs locally or anywhere else in the world, since we have 34,000 clubs internationally.  Rob Stroud also encouraged members to consider becoming involved at the district level and meet other Rotarians from the region.

There was a one-question quiz at the end – What is the maximum number of make-ups you can garner on one Wednesday? Can you guess? Answer is four. 1) New Member Coffee 2) Committee Meeting before Rotary 3) Committee Meeting after Rotary 4) Evening Fellowship.

Twenty-eight Rotarians attended the event at the Madison Club and a good time was had by all. Jason Beren, who chairs our New Member Event Sub-Committee, welcomed everyone and thanked Mary Gaffney- Ward and the Madison Club for hosting the event and providing all the great snacks.

Introductions were made around the room with comments from everyone about what Rotary means to them.  Past President Melanie Ramey charmed the group, as usual. The new members received a great overview of all we do. There were several members who commented on perfect attendance since 1998, one new member commented she had perfect attendance as well since Wednesday was her first meeting! President Tim Stadleman mentioned there are over 25 fellowship groups and over 40 committees for new members to choose from.

Karl Gutknecht spoke about our club being around over 100 years and that it is the 7th largest in the world. He gave an impassioned talk about Rotary and how it is “transformative.”  It has changed his life in so many wonderful ways. He referenced the great administrative staff, great club leadership, and the ability to meet and connect with so many interesting people locally and throughout the world. He mentioned just a few of the many international projects we support, Polio Plus, clean water initiatives, Group Study Exchange, projects in Peru and Africa and so much more.  He told everyone about our Rotary founder Paul Harris. He said being a Paul Harris Fellow has been his calling card around the world.  He encouraged new members to “be involved, engaged, make a difference and consider becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.”

President Tim talked about our recent team of Russian visitors hosted by our club for a week of learning about businesses in the Madison area.  Currently, our club is hosting Dr. Veronique Costantino from Corsica, France.  She is studying medicine at UW-Madison through a Rotary International grant.
